Black Panther is the 18th episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 2.

Synopsis[]

The Black Panther is a one-of-a-kind emerald. When light shines on it from a certain angle, a black panther appears to be hidden inside it. Lupin steals the gem, planning to give it to Fujiko for her birthday, and hides it temporarily in the museum in order to evade a body check by the strict security cordon, planning to come back for it later. But when both Zenigata and Inspector Conaiseau get involved as well, the statue where the emerald is hidden gets accidentally transported to a nude resort where Lupin, Jigen and Goemon attempt to retrieve it.

Translation Notes[]

Inspector Conaiseau's and Hageito's names were changed in dubs due to copyright reasons of the former and translation choice of the latter. For the English dub and the Pioneer/Geneon subtitles, Hageito was kept but Conaiseau became a romanization of the Japanese Konaizo. Conaiseau and Hageito in the Italian dub were renamed to Noccom and Chi-Mina. In the French dub, he had become Inspecteur Blouzot a reference to the film director Henri-Georges Clouzot while Hageito was inconsistent between Ayeto and Ayuto. For the home video releases, the inspector had become Nevienpas on the French DVD subtitles a translation of the Japanese meaning and Conoiseau for the Italian Blu-ray.

In the English dub; Conaiseau, Shakir and the police officers were given French accents.

The English dub makes a reference to Shaquille O'Neal as Konaizo wonders how Shakil "balances his police work with his basketball career". In the same scene, the English dub also changed from "Inspector Zenigata from Japan" to "Inspector Zenigata of Interpol".

When Zenigata goes to the hotel looking for Lupin, he says in the Japanese original that he is looking for a Japanese womanizing cheapskate. In the Italian dub, he says that he is looking for a French criminal. The English dub had completely rewritten the line to "This is what he looks like, well most of the time I mean. Sometimes he's a... woman or a Eskimo or... Anyway have you seen him?"

In the Japanese original, while running away from the group of women, Lupin simply shouts for help. In the English dub, Conaiseau says "That's no way to talk to a lady!" to which Lupin sarcastically replies "Oh, like I'm gonna take lessons from you!"

Censorship[]

English[]

On the Adult Swim broadcast, Lupin looking at his binoculars at the island was removed and any close up nudity shots were cut.[2]

Notes[]

  • This episode is a homage to the Pink Panther movies. The plotline with the Black Panther diamond references the original film and The Return of The Pink Panther. It is also inspired by A Shot in the Dark such as Hageito randomly attacking Conaiseau is referencing Cato attacking Clouseau as well as Lupin and Conaiseau going to the nudity colony.
  • The name "Conaiseau" (Konaizoo) is a pun on the Japanese pronunciation of "Clouseau." It comes out as "Kuru zo" (Here I come), and the word "Konai zo" is the negative form of this verb in this conjugation.
  • In the original US DVD release by Pioneer/Geneon as well as on streaming services (due to using the Pioneer/Geneon masters), the birthday song that Lupin, Jigen and Goemon sing to Fujiko was changed due to rights issues regarding the song "Happy Birthday" at the time of release. This new song included vocals by Kanichi Kurita, making this his only voice role in this series. After Warner/Chappell's copyright claim to the original song was declared invalid in 2016, allowing it to enter the public domain, the original track has been used on later releases, including the Discotek DVD. However, due to the Italian Blu-ray using subtitles that are based on the Pioneer/Geneon translation, it just says "Happy Birthday!" syncing to the replaced soundtrack despite the Blu-ray using the original Japanese soundtrack. It should be "Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday dear Fujiko-chan, Happy birthday to you."
  • The title is reference to the word pursuit which is a journey and birthday suit which means to be completely naked
