Hot Shot: This is Fujiko is the 110th episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 2.

Synopsis[]

A theft report is received from the police state of Malda. The investigation methods are much too harsh and unforgiving, considering that all that was stolen was one camera. Actually, this camera is the invention of the century: it can take pictures of the future. Thus, the hand of the state police closes in on Fujiko, who has been winning a string of large gambles. The excessively heavy-handed treatment pushes Zenigata past his limits. Against a robot adversary, will one police officer's fighting spirit do the job?!

Long Summary[]

Zenigata had arrived at Malda and entered the government building however Fujiko Mine was also there disguised as a cleaner and tripped him up to plant a bug on his shoe. Secretary Gappert greeted Zenigata and was convinced that Lupin III stole something as he took Zenigata to the meeting room, Security Minister Bosmarck told Zenigata that a camera was stolen and Dr. Heidelberg just said that it was "an ordinary camera". They were desperate to get it back "for the fatherland", an insistently repeated mantra. Meanwhile Lupin, Jigen, and Goemon are at the horse races. Goemon bets on a horse called Goemonjou and wins on extremely slim odds; so do two men who take pictures of the finish line before each round. When Lupin and Jigen go to collect the winnings, they are captured by Zenigata and Gappert's men. Zenigata looks on uneasily as Gappert tortures Jigen and Lupin by subjecting them to their worst fears: the Iron Maiden and tickling, respectively. Fujiko, who has been gathering information about the camera, seduces the two men who have it on their way out from the racetrack and steals it.

After a fruitless day of interrogation, Jigen and Lupin are locked in a cell. Goemon breaks them out. The three realize that the camera Gappert's men are after is now in Fujiko's hands. Lupin goes to the casino where Fujiko is winning huge sums and swaps the camera with a fake, just before she is arrested by Gappert. Back in their hideout, Lupin snaps a photo of Jigen, who is about to head to the shower, and the camera prints a polaroid of Jigen showering. Jigen adjusts the camera's time setting and takes a photo of Lupin's shriveled ancient body a hundred years in the future. Realizing that the camera takes photos of the future, the three run around taking photos of a woman 30 years into the future who was embarrassed that they laughed at her and of the ocean in the 22nd century before they saw Heidelberg fleeing from Gappert's tanks causing them to leave. Lupin asked Goemon to "do the usual" and he used the Zantetsuken to slice the tanks. Later, they meet up with Heidelberg, the scientist who invented the camera. Heidelberg explains that he used a tachyon particle and was trying to invent a camera that would take photographs of the past in order to aid police investigations but it went to the future by mistake.

Fujiko was then tortured by subjecting her to her worst fear, claustrophobia. Unable to watch any longer, Zenigata throws Bosmarck towards the control panel and pulls the lever to save Fujiko. Bosmarck turned out to be a robot but Gappert pointed a gun at Zenigata, Zenigata threw Bosmarck's head at an officer and ran away as Gappert was shooting at him and sent out his officers. Zenigata rescues Fujiko and noticed a helicopter as Lupin, Jigen and Heidelberg had arrived. Lupin knew that Gappert had figured out their weaknesses and wanted to know Gappert's weakness, Heidelberg tells him that Gappert has a phobia of mice as a mouse bit his nose when he was young. Bosmarck was reassembled and took on Zenigata for the fatherland but he was stopped by Gappert, Zenigata and Fujiko were then captured by Gappert just as the helicopter had landed. Gappert offers Fujiko and Zenigata in exchange for Heidelberg and the camera however Heidelberg refused, Lupin gives him the camera for Fujiko. As Gappert tried to test it, a toy mouse springs out at him, and he reels backward in fear causing Zenigata to headbutt Bosmarck for his escape. Bosmarck went out of control and took out the officers as well as crushing Gappert. The gang take the opportunity to leave, but the helicopter is damaged and can't carry the weight of all six of them. They spot a small island that is populated by nudists, much to Goemon's chagrin, and land safely. Jigen remarks that it was a shame to have lost the camera, but Lupin counters that he didn't want to see what Fujiko looked like in fifty years after all. Jigen laughs in delight.

LupinIIIS2Ep110titlecard
Title Card

Translation Notes[]

The original Japanese title is a reference to Gekisha a magazine series published by Shogakukan that first appeared in GORO, it is a photo book of famous actresses and singers that also contains nude photos of models. The English Discotek title is a nod to the TV show "Candid Camera".

Censorship[]

International[]

  • The bottle of Camus Napoleon Cognac was edited to remove the writing and logos.

Italian[]

The episode was fully dubbed into Italian and was originally aired almost uncut as well as DVD releases however when it is aired on Mediaset channels, scenes were removed and edited due to regulation and in one case was always cut.

  • The beginning where the devil statue is shown is cut out. This is due to adding the Italian title card at the beginning rather than in the Japanese original where the title card appears from 3 minutes 43 seconds into the episode. This affects all TV airings from the original EuroTV airing in the early 1980s to the current airings on Italia 2 but not DVD or Blu-ray releases where the title card is in same place as the original.
  • There is a freeze frame of Lupin and Jigen at the race track. This is to hide the score card with Japanese text.
  • When the prostitute gets introduced, it zooms on her face twice removing the zoom on her breasts.
  • There is a freeze frame of Lupin legs to hide the bottle of Camus Napoleon Cognac. This is due to that the original Japanese masters were used instead of the later International masters that had this censorship done.
  • Even though it is not censorship but as a technicality, the two pictures of Fujiko in the newspaper were replaced by freeze frames due to the above reason. The reason why it is not censorship is due to that the International masters are textless at this scene.
  • The Jigen in the shower photo was replaced with a freeze frame of Lupin, Jigen and Goemon looking at the photo.

The episode finishes where the damaged helicopter flies off into the sunset as the ending involves the Lupin gang crashing into a nudist beach.

Mistakes[]

  • In the English subtitles, depending on translation it either says "Fujiko Mine guessed all the soccer match scores" or "Fujiko Mine guessed precise score of football game?" despite being clearly shown that she was in an American football match. This mistake was also in the original Japanese subtitles where it mentions football but not American football.
  • Lupin shows Jigen a photo of people riding octopus buses in the future. Lupin is supposed to be afraid of octopus, which ironically isn't exploited in the episode.
  • The octopus buses inadvertently echo a line said by Arsène Lupin in the 1932 film, where he facetiously confesses a dream where he was riding a pink octopus in a hailstorm.
  • Jigen faints when he's tortured with spikes. This fear hasn't come up before as he didn't faint in Part 2 Episode 85.
  • The episode is known for having nudity for no discernable reason other than for the sake of it.

Notes[]

  • The camera has the date and time set up as 13:26, 1975.11.19. The episode was aired on November 19, 1979 so either the episode was set four years before airing or an animation mistake with the animators knowing the air-date ahead of time.
